Meloni's hard-right ally Fitto gets EU commission VP role

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday named Italy's Raffaele Fitto, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's hard-right Brothers of Italy party, as an executive vice president in the next European Commission.

"Raffaele Fitto will be the executive vice president for cohesion and reforms. He will be responsible for the portfolio dealing with cohesion policy, regional development, and cities," von der Leyen said, announcing the nomination despite concerns from EU lawmakers on the left and center.
