Lebanon enters ‘new phase’ after ceasefire, President Aoun says in national speech

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said negotiations will never come at the expense of Lebanon’s rights, principles or sovereignty, stressing they reflect strength rather than weakness.

In an address to the nation, Aoun said the ongoing negotiations are “not a sign of weakness, retreat or concession,” but rather a decision rooted in confidence in Lebanon’s rights and a commitment to protect its people.

Aoun added that Lebanon has regained its sovereignty and decision-making power for the first time in nearly half a century, declaring that the country is no longer “a card in anyone’s pocket or a battlefield for others’ wars.”

The president credited the recently announced ceasefire to collective efforts and sacrifices by the Lebanese people, including those who remained steadfast in their homes and those who supported displaced residents.

He said Lebanon now stands at the beginning of a new phase, shifting from efforts to secure a ceasefire toward negotiating lasting agreements that safeguard “the rights of our people, the unity of our land and the sovereignty of our state.”

Aoun underscored that the country’s strength lies in the awareness and unity of its people, calling for adherence to a single state governed by unified laws and protected by one national military force.

Addressing the Lebanese public, he urged citizens to act rationally and not be swayed by voices seeking to sow division or exploit emotions for political gain.

“Do not allow doubt and accusations to divide you,” he said.

Aoun also reassured displaced residents that they would return home, saying their sacrifices would not be in vain, while warning against those “gambling with Lebanon’s fate.”

He stressed that “the state project alone is the strongest, most lasting and most secure for all,” adding: “Lebanon will not be broken, its people will not die, and its rights will prevail.”

The president expressed gratitude to international and regional partners who contributed to the ceasefire, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, saying he counts on their continued support to build on the progress achieved.

Aoun concluded by affirming that Lebanon chooses prosperity over collapse and rationality over destruction, pledging full readiness to assume responsibility in defending the country, protecting its people, and securing its future.
