EU crisis official: Over half of Lebanon’s population depends on humanitarian aid

The EU’s crisis management official, Hadja Lahbib, said that more than half of Lebanon’s population depends on humanitarian aid amid Israel’s continued strikes despite the ceasefire in place since April 17.

Speaking to journalists after meeting President Joseph Aoun in Beirut, Lahbib said: “At present, more than three million people — more than half of the population here in Lebanon — depend on humanitarian assistance to survive.”

She added that the European Union has provided €100 million in aid since the war began on March 2, and has sent six aircraft carrying humanitarian assistance, with a seventh expected to arrive on Saturday.

Lahbib described the ceasefire as a “narrow window of hope,” calling on Hezbollah to stop its attacks and disarm, and stressing that “Israel must also put an end to its shelling operations.”

She concluded that for the ceasefire to lead to peace, “political courage is needed to address the root causes of this conflict.”
