Netanyahu says Israel seeks peace with Lebanon, links Hezbollah’s future to fate of Iranian regime

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said discussions with Lebanon focus on ways to cooperate militarily and politically, and possibly through a division of roles, to eliminate Hezbollah, adding that this objective has not yet been achieved but must eventually happen.

In remarks to CBS News, Netanyahu said many in Lebanon support dismantling Hezbollah because they seek freedom from the group’s control, but argued that Lebanese authorities have not yet demonstrated the ability to confront it directly.

Netanyahu also said a major weakening or potential collapse of the Iranian regime could lead to the end of Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, while noting that such a scenario remains uncertain.

He added that Hezbollah acts as an Iranian proxy that imposes Tehran’s influence over Lebanon, stressing that Israel holds no hostility toward Lebanon and remains interested in reaching peace with the country despite the presence of the group.
