Elias Bou Saab calls for judicial reforms, says amnesty law preserves army families’ rights

Deputy Parliament Speaker Elias Bou Saab said authorities took into account remarks raised by the Defense Ministry, Interior Ministry, the Lebanese Army, and the judiciary during discussions over the draft amnesty law, adding that the judiciary remains responsible for delays in many cases.

Bou Saab called on the government and Justice Minister to find a comprehensive solution to prolonged trials and to prevent the detention of individuals without justification.

He also said that, in cases involving death sentences, the law adopted a prison term equivalent to 28 years, or around 21 and a half years in effective detention.

Bou Saab stressed that the law preserves the right of families of Lebanese Army members killed in the line of duty to pursue personal claims before civil courts, noting that the army “was not a party to the conflicts.”
