Berri says to Asharq Al-Awsat he rejects direct negotiations with Israel

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri voiced "cautious relief" over the ceasefire decision on the Lebanese front, describing it as a step in the right direction.

In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, Berri reiterated his rejection of any direct negotiations with Israel, maintaining a long-standing political stance.

He said he would not call on residents of South Lebanon to return to their towns and homes until conditions are deemed suitable, noting that the current ceasefire announcement does not include an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory at this stage.

"The important thing now is that the file has started moving, and the ceasefire is a step in the right direction," Berri said.

He also expressed confidence in the internal situation, saying stability within Lebanon is "becoming stronger and stronger."
