Israel president says must avoid new election despite inconclusive result

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Wednesday that every effort must be made to avoid a new election, after partial results from the preceding day's vote showed neither of the main blocs had secured a majority of parliamentary seats.

"One thing must be clear, and I said this before the elections too: we must do everything we can, certainly after yesterday, to avoid another round of elections," said Herzog, who as president is tasked with determining which candidate to tap to form a government.
