WFP: Food rations in Sudan to be reduced starting January due to funding shortages

The U.N. World Food Program said on Friday it will begin reducing food rations next month for Sudanese communities facing famine due to a lack of funding.

Ross Smith, the WFP’s Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Rome: “Starting in January, we will have to cut food rations by 70 percent for communities already facing famine, and by 50 percent for communities at risk of famine.”

He added, “And starting in April, we will be facing a total collapse in funding.”
